What began as a sunny afternoon of yoga and laughter with Peter Sterios and thirty-six Nicaraguan school children led to envisioning something quite specific and impactful. For those of us who know Peter, he thinks big and from the heart, plans 'on point' and makes things happen. Most importantly, Peter knows the strength of building and cultivating communities. In fact, it's his passion. And thus, karmaNICA was born with the belief that kids should be able to play, be active and well...just be kids.
The Project serves to directly benefit the children of the Cedric Martin School through the construction of:
•A SMALL SOCCER FIELD
•A BASKETBALL COURT
•A PLAYGROUND AREA FOR GIRLS
•AN ADDITIONAL CLASSROOM (At present, the school is a small, one-room structure for all ages and grade levels)
The school was settled at the foot of the Mombacho Volcano in the year 2001 in a community known as Costa Sur, which is inhabited by more than 40 families. Most in the village are subsistence level farmers and despite their exceptionally poor economic conditions, they faithfully send their children to the school. Although most don’t have a life situation that is conducive to study, many of the children walk long distances each day from their homes to school (up to 2 hours) lacking uniforms and basic supplies.
Peter's time and personal financial commitment has provided the groundwork for the project. With the assistance of our additional sponsors and through our respective communities of friends and peers, we are thrilled to launch the beginning stages of development of karmaNICA for the Cedric Martin School. It is our hope that you, too will be inspired to be part of our new footprint in Nicaragua.
